Why Mechanics Should Use Disposable Gloves

A mechanic is a dirty job – but somebody’s got to do it! Mechanics don’t just get messy due to dirt and oil, they are also exposed to a lot of chemicals on a daily basis. From soap and fuels to cleaners and oils, mechanics have the potential to touch and breath in toxic and dangerous chemicals every day on the job. Unfortunately, these chemicals are necessary to keep a car running and clean, so they must be used. However, it’s important for a mechanic to properly protect himself during his shift, so he can avoid getting sick or developing illnesses from exposure to these many chemicals.

Side Effects of Auto Chemicals When Not Wearing Disposable Gloves

There’s a lot of hazardous chemicals that mechanics work with including auto paints, fuels, solvents, brake cleaner, brake fluid, petroleum products, and more. In fact, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), benzene exposure has short-term and long-term side effects. Short-term side effects include dizziness, dermatitis, hives, swelling, drowsiness, bronchitis, unconsciousness, and death while long-term side effects can cause bone marrow and blood production problems and neurological disorders.

These chemicals are not safe to handle with bare hands; more mechanic businesses are requiring their workers to wear gloves, face masks, and make sure the area is well ventilated. Gloves help create a barrier between the chemicals and epidermis. However, latex gloves are not powerful enough the chemical isocyanates (found in auto paint).  Latex gloves break down by these chemicals. Unfortunately, mechanics can’t always see the chemicals getting through the glove. Also, if a worker handles isocyanates with his or her bare hands, it can take the chemical awhile to be removed from the skin, which means the worker can spread the chemical outside of the shop in public and in his/her home exposing strangers and family members to the toxin.

The best glove a mechanic can wear is a nitrile glove to stay protected from the chemicals. Nitrile gloves are form-fitting and comfortable.

By wearing a nitrile or vinyl glove, a mechanic can stay protected from the chemicals he or she is handling. Nitrile gloves are petroleum-based, which means it can handle coming in contact with petroleum-based chemicals.
